The Iowa City Farmers Market will continue this year — but only as an online presence.
The farmers market will continue running through its digital platform for the rest of the year, according to the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department. In a June 24 release, it said the recent increase in Johnson County COVID-19 cases mandated the decision. The traditional market was supposed to be closed until July 4 and reopen with health and safety guidelines for COVID-19.
“It is for this reason, as well as our concern for the safety of vendors and customers that the City of Iowa City and the Parks and Recreation Department have determined that the Iowa City Farmers Market will remain closed through the 2020 season,” the department stated in the release.
It formed a partnership with Field to Family in May to encourage consumers to shop online for homegrown products such as meat, poultry and fresh vegetables during the pandemic. Contact-free pick-ups are done at the Chauncey Swan parking ramp on Saturday mornings for all completed orders.
