After Black Lives Matter protests, the University of Iowa was left to clean up $1 million in spray paint on university buildings that supported the movement.

Protesters a part of the Iowa Freedom Riders (IFR) group left paint that said "F12," "BLM," "Unite" and "Say their names," Iowa City Press-Citizen reported.

“The spray-painting has been preserved in photographs and will, I hope, contribute to educational programming across our campus for years to come,” then-executive vice president and provost Montserrat Fuentes said in a press release, Iowa City Press-Citizen reported. “But what is most important is that we work with the communities that are suffering and struggling to be heard to ensure that their voices are amplified and that we continue to learn and move toward meaningful change.”

The Iowa Freedom Riders said they would no longer use spray paint to leave messages and haven't held a protest in over a month. But the group has a planned protest for Friday, Aug. 21 on the pentacrest of the University of Iowa.

"The protest will be centered around getting Justice for Makeda [Scott], information on Tremayne (Clemons) case, and keeping you all updated on what IFR has been up to," the group said on their Instagram profile.
