A city order requiring people in the City of Iowa City to wear face masks or coverings in public places has been extended to Nov. 13 by Mayor Bruce Teague, according to a press release from Iowa City.
The order, which was implemented on July 21, will help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the city.
"The order, extended on Monday, Sept. 14, states that a face covering that covers the nose and mouth must be worn in all public spaces until Friday, Nov. 13. The order in its entirety can be read online," the city said in the press release.
With the extension comes several changes to the order as well.
If a person isn't wearing a mask, they can be fined for the first offense of a minimum $105 and be charged with a misdemeanor.
A second offense can also result in an $855 maximum fine and charged with a simple misdemeanor, according to the press release.
Places where masks are required to be worn include: Grocery stores, pharmacies, hardware stores, retail stores, outdoor public spaces and public transportation.
