The University of Iowa cross country teams concluded their participation at the Big Ten Championships held at Forest Akers East Golf Course in East Lansing, Michigan, on Friday. Both the men’s and women’s teams finished 14th in their respective races, with the women scoring 410 points and the men 415.
Sophomore Elena Torres led the Hawkeye women for the fifth consecutive meet, finishing the 6,000-meter race with a season-best time of 21:34.4. Other notable performances included sophomores Hillary Trainor (21:46.6) and Marissa Long (22:00.0), who also recorded season bests. Freshman Ella Magallan continued her strong debut season by securing a scoring spot with a time of 22:14.8. Junior Audra Soderlind completed the top five for Iowa with a personal-best time of 22:15.5, while Ellie Rathe achieved a lifetime best of 23:30.3.
On the men’s side, senior Hayden Kuhn was first for Iowa, finishing the 8,000 meters in 24:56.8. Freshman Elias Arbuckle followed with a time of 25:04.4, marking another consistent performance in his debut season. Seniors Carson Houg (25:21.9) and Brayden Burnett (25:31.6), along with sophomore Kyle Montgomery (25:28.0), rounded out the team’s scoring runners.
Elias Arbuckle and Ella Magallan have now scored in nine out of ten races combined during their freshman seasons.
Oregon claimed both team titles at the event and had individual champions in both the women’s and men’s races.
Coach Randy Hasenbank commented on his teams’ efforts following the meet: “The women ran a very strong race today. Obviously, we are competing in a great conference. If you watched the live results, our entire roster continued to move up throughout the race. We finished with a very strong last 1K. We had three sophomores and a freshman in our top five. Elena continued to set the pace up front and Hillary really improved this season. On the men’s side, Eli Arbuckle had a really consistent season as a true freshman and I am proud of the season that he has put together. Hayden ran much better today. Kyle had a great start to the race, took a risk to put himself out there and wasn’t quit able to finish the way he would have liked. He has been fairly consistent. We will regroup and get both squads ready for the NCAA Regional in two weeks.”
Next on Iowa's schedule is an appearance at the NCAA Midwest Regional on November 14 in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
