Iowa women’s basketball defeats Ashland University in exhibition opener

The University of Iowa women’s basketball team began their season with a 104-63 exhibition win over Ashland University at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Thursday night.

Senior Hannah Stuelke led the Hawkeyes, scoring 23 points and collecting nine rebounds. Sophomore transfer Emely Rodriguez contributed 17 points and four assists in her first game for Iowa. Sophomore Chit-Chat Wright made her first career start as a Hawkeye, finishing with 12 points and four assists.

Iowa established an early lead, ending the first quarter ahead 26-15. Ava Heiden added eight points and six rebounds during this period, while Stuelke and Rodriguez each scored five points. Wright also contributed four points and two assists.

By halftime, Iowa had extended its lead to 51-27. Eight players scored for the Hawkeyes in the second quarter, including nine bench points. The team held Ashland scoreless for five minutes during a 15-0 run in which they made six out of seven field goal attempts.

In the third quarter, Stuelke scored 11 more points as Iowa increased its advantage to 81-46. The Hawkeyes forced three turnovers that resulted in seven points and added 20 paint points.

During the final quarter, freshman Layla Hays scored seven points and grabbed three rebounds in her debut as Iowa maintained control to close out the game with a 21-17 run.

Individual performances included Ava Heiden recording a double-double with 14 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Shooting guard Taylor McCabe finished with nine points on three-of-six shooting from beyond the arc. True freshmen Addie Deal, Layla Hays, and Journey Houston all saw playing time and scored in the first half.

All fourteen players on Iowa’s roster participated in the exhibition match. The team collectively shot 56 percent from the field (42-for-75) and scored 66 of their total points inside the paint.

Iowa will open its regular season on November 3 against Southern University at home. The game is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. Central Time tipoff and will be available via B1G+ streaming service (subscription required) as well as on the Hawkeye Radio Network.
