The University of Iowa women's rowing team will divide its roster this weekend to compete both at home and away. On Saturday, November 1, the Hawkeyes will host the Iowa Chase on the Iowa River, with races starting at 9:35 a.m. Central Time. The following day, the team will participate in the Princeton Chase on Lake Carnegie, with rolling starts beginning at 9:00 a.m.
Head coach Jeff Garbutt commented on the unusual split schedule for the program. “This is not something we typically do, but it’s a great opportunity for everyone to suit up and compete. Each boat will have targets that we want them to hit whether they are at home or on the road. Last year we had a lot of success as a team at the Iowa Chase, and we are still looking to continue that into this year. Princeton will be a great benchmark to see how fall training has impacted our performance and will drive how we set up winter training. It is always a great day when we can represent the black and gold.”
At the Princeton Chase, Iowa will face several nationally ranked teams including No. 6 Princeton, No. 10 Virginia, No. 16 Penn, No. 17 Dartmouth, and No. 24 Clemson. Big Ten rivals such as No. 8 Rutgers and No. 11 Michigan are also in attendance. The competition consists of two open events—each a three-mile time trial—with a total of 61 eights and 36 fours racing. Iowa is entering two varsity eight boats and dividing those crews into four different fours for further competition.
The event schedule for Sunday lists Women’s Open Eights at 9:00 a.m., followed by Women’s Open Fours at 12:20 p.m.
Results from the Princeton Chase will be available online via Regatta Timing.
Meanwhile, during Saturday's Iowa Chase in Iowa City, Drake University will compete against Iowa in head race style over a distance of 3,500 meters using either four- or eight-person boats. The event also welcomes community participants ranging from junior rowers to masters-level athletes.
Saturday's local schedule begins with Novice Fours at 9:35 a.m., Collegiate Eights at 9:55 a.m., Novice Eights at 10:55 a.m., and Collegiate Fours concluding at 11:20 a.m.
Spectators can view races from several bridges—Park Road Bridge, Hancher Bridge, or IMU Bridge—or along riverbanks near Hancher Auditorium.
