The University of Iowa rowing team concluded its fall racing schedule with competitions at the Iowa Chase on the Iowa River and the Princeton Chase on Lake Carnegie.
During Saturday's Iowa Chase, rowers from junior to master's level participated in a 3,500-meter time trial. The Hawkeyes won all boat classes in races against Drake.
Associate Head Coach Megan Fitzpatrick commented, "It was great to see our first years compete for the first time as Hawkeyes! They showed good depth across the whole squad and we’re looking forward to how they’ll take that into our winter training block. As a team we hit the split times we were looking for and did a good job executing the race plans we outlined in practice this week."
On Sunday at the Princeton Chase, Iowa competed against seven ranked teams. In a field of 62 varsity eight boats, Iowa’s A boat placed 15th. Both of Iowa’s boats achieved program-best times over the three-mile course. In the fours event, with adjusted lineups, Iowa finished 16th, 17th, and 18th.
Head Coach Jeff Garbutt stated, "I am proud of how our athletes went out and attacked the challenge this weekend. We showed really solid performances from all boats this weekend and I am excited about the progress that the program is making. Coach Fitzpatrick did a great job leading our athletes at home. It was great for our newcomers to get their first victories as Hawkeyes and our experienced athletes did a great job leading throughout the weekend."
