Iowa Hawkeyes women's basketball team is set to host Southern University at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City on Monday, Nov. 3, with tip-off scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Central Time. The game will be broadcast on the Hawkeye Radio Network and streamed live on B1G+. Rob Brooks and Kathryn Reynolds will provide radio commentary, while AJ Reisetter and Sam Kupres will call the action for the stream.
Iowa enters the matchup with a strong recent history, having competed in back-to-back National Championships in 2023 and 2024. The team tied Purdue (1998-99) and Maryland (2014-15) for most wins in Big Ten history during the 2023-24 season, recording 34 victories. The Hawkeyes have also been ranked among the top ten nationally in attendance for each of the past six seasons.
The program has secured four Big Ten Tournament titles over the last seven years and has achieved nine consecutive seasons with at least 20 wins. Since November 2016, Iowa holds a home record of 127-20, and within Big Ten play over the last four years, they are 65-19.
Six players from Iowa have been drafted into the WNBA since 2019: Kathleen Doyle, Megan Gustafson, Monika Czinano, Caitlin Clark, Kate Martin, and Lucy Olsen. The team has also had at least one First Team All-Big Ten honoree each year since 2017.
Jan Jensen took over as head coach on May 13, 2024, becoming just the sixth head coach in program history. In her first season at Iowa, Jensen notched more than 20 wins—a feat achieved by only two other coaches before her—and now holds a record of 23-11 overall with a conference mark of 10-8.
Iowa has participated in postseason tournaments in all but two of the past twenty-five seasons—nineteen NCAA Tournament appearances and four WNIT bids—while this year's roster features nine freshmen and sophomores.
The upcoming game marks the fourth meeting between Iowa and Southern University; Iowa leads the series 3-0. Southern enters after being picked first in this year's Southwestern Athletic Conference preseason poll following their conference championship last season under head coach Carlos Funchess.
All tickets for Iowa's home games this season are sold out for a third consecutive year. The program currently boasts a streak of thirty-six straight home sellouts—the longest active run nationally—and continues to rank among national leaders in attendance.
This season brings several new faces to Iowa's staff and roster. Lasondra Barrett joins as an assistant coach after previous roles at FIU, LA Tech, Houston, and Georgia Tech. Jasmyn Walker arrives as an assistant coach following positions at George Washington, Purdue Fort Wayne, Butler, Ferris State, and Davenport University. Former player Sydney Affolter returns as a graduate assistant. Additionally, sophomore transfers Chit-Chat Wright (Georgia Tech) and Emely Rodriguez (UCF) join three ESPN top-100 recruits: Addie Deal (#18), Layla Hays (#70), and Journey Houston (#85).
