Iowa women’s golf sits second after first day at Diane Thomason Invitational

The University of Iowa women’s golf team began the Diane Thomason Invitational at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, completing two rounds on Monday. The Hawkeyes finished the day with a combined score of 599 (296 in the first round and 303 in the second), placing them second out of 16 teams after day one.

Senior Shannyn Vogler and junior Maura Peters both ended the day tied for sixth place individually, each recording a total score of 148 over two rounds. Vogler shot a 76 in her opening round and improved to an even-par 72 in her second. Peters posted scores of 75 and 73.

Junior Ximena Benites started strong with a two-under-par 70, which included five birdies, but followed with an 80 in her second round. She is currently tied for twelfth place. Senior Riley Lewis recorded rounds of 76 and 78, bringing her total to 154 (+10) and tying her for twenty-seventh position. Freshman Sunny Wang is tied for thirty-fifth after shooting a 75 and an 80.

Montana State leads the team competition with a score of 593 (300-293). Lauren Greeny from Montana State holds the individual lead at five-under par after setting a new women’s tournament course record at Finkbine Golf Course by shooting a first-round score of 64.

The final round of the Diane Thomason Invitational will take place on Tuesday, September 30, beginning at 8:30 a.m. CT with a shotgun start.
