With temperatures forecasted to rise above 90 degrees, the University of Iowa is introducing measures to help fans attending Saturday’s football game at Kinnick Stadium.

Fans are allowed to bring one sealed water bottle of any size or one empty refillable water bottle into the stadium. For those seeking relief from the heat, an expanded rest area will be available outside the First Aid Station at the southeast corner of the stadium, offering shelter, cool air, and hydration.

An air-conditioned tent provided by Johnson County Homeland Security & Emergency Management Agency will be set up in Krause Family Plaza. Additionally, Johnson County Ambulance Services will have a UTV staged in parking lots before the game for quick response and can deploy another ambulance if needed.

Medical staff from UIHC—including physicians, nurses, and students from the Carver College of Medicine—will be on hand to assist patients.

Fans are advised to increase their fluid intake with non-alcoholic and decaffeinated beverages and start hydrating days ahead of the event. They should wear lightweight clothing and sunscreen, use hats for shade, seek out shaded or air-conditioned spaces when possible, and monitor themselves and others for symptoms of heat-related illness. Anyone feeling dizzy or weak should move into an air-conditioned space and drink cool liquids immediately.

“If you are experiencing symptoms of heat-related illness, you are encouraged to go home if you are able to do so or seek medical assistance, as applicable.”

The Hawkeyes are scheduled to play UMass at 6:40 p.m. The game has sold out and will be televised on BTN as well as broadcast on the Hawkeye Radio Network.
