Two University of Iowa women’s cross country athletes have received weekly honors from the Big Ten Conference following their performances at the Hawkeye Invite. The announcement was made by the league on Wednesday.

Ella Magallan was named the Big Ten Women’s Freshman of the Week, while Elena Torres earned recognition as the Big Ten Women’s Athlete of the Week.

Torres achieved a personal best in the 4,000-meter race at the Hawkeye Invite on September 5, finishing with a time of 13:44.6. This result moved her to third place in program history for that event. Torres won the race and helped lead Iowa to a team victory in its season opener. She had previously been named one of the Big Ten’s Preseason Runners to Watch for 2025.

Magallan, from Burleson, Texas, finished eighth overall in her first collegiate race with a time of 14:25.1 in the 4,000 meters. She was Iowa’s fifth finisher and contributed points toward the team title during her debut.

The Hawkeyes will compete next at the Roy Griak Invitational on Friday, September 19, in Minneapolis.
