Former University of Iowa defensive lineman Derreck Robinson died on August 13 in San Diego at the age of 43.
Robinson, originally from Minneapolis, joined the Iowa Hawkeyes in 2000 and played through the 2004 season. During his time with the team, Iowa achieved a 38-12 record, claimed a share of two Big Ten Conference titles, and won three bowl games: the Alamo Bowl, Outback Bowl, and Capital One Bowl.
“We are saddened to hear about Derreck’s passing,” said Moon Family Head Football Coach Kirk Ferentz. “Derreck had a big, beautiful personality that inspired those around him. As a player, he persevered through ups and downs and was an important leader on our 2004 Championship team. He had a solid career in the NFL and made a great impact on those around him after football in California.
"We were excited to have him back as an honorary captain for our win over Michigan in 2016. His legacy continues to inspire our players today.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Derreck’s family, former teammates, and many friends across the country.”
Robinson ended his college career with 76 tackles, including 16 tackles for loss and four sacks. He also forced two fumbles and recovered two fumbles during his time at Iowa.
After graduating from Iowa, Robinson was not selected in the NFL Draft but signed as a free agent with San Diego in 2005. He later played for Miami and Cleveland before retiring from professional football in 2011.
In 2016, Robinson returned to Iowa City as an honorary captain for the Hawkeyes’ game against No. 2 Michigan—a contest that Iowa won by one point.
