University of Iowa football players Logan Jones and Zach Ortwerth have been named to major preseason watch lists for the 2025 season. Jones, a senior, is on the Rimington Trophy Watch List, which honors the nation’s top center. Ortwerth, a junior, has been selected for the John Mackey Award Watch List, given annually to college football’s most outstanding tight end.

Jones, who stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 302 pounds, has now appeared on the Rimington preseason list for three consecutive years. He follows in the footsteps of former Hawkeye Tyler Linderbaum, who won the Rimington Trophy in 2021. Earlier this month, Jones was also included on the Outland Trophy Watch List—an award recognizing the country’s best offensive lineman.

Last season as a junior, Jones started all 12 games for Iowa and was recognized as a first-team all-conference player and an honorable mention All-American by Phil Steele. He anchored an offensive line that allowed only 17 sacks while helping Iowa rush for 2,564 yards—the team’s highest total since 2002. This month he received additional preseason recognition as a second-team All-American by Walter Camp and third-team All-American by both Athlon and Phil Steele.

The winner of the Rimington Trophy is determined by which center receives the most first-team votes across three All-America teams: Walter Camp Foundation, Sporting News, and Football Writers Association of America. The trophy is named after Dave Rimington—a two-time All-American at Nebraska and College Football Hall of Fame inductee.

Ortwerth played in all 13 games last season with four starts. The St. Louis native caught 11 passes for 133 yards and recorded a career-high 66 receiving yards in Iowa’s win over Wisconsin in 2024. After his sophomore year, he received a Coaches Appreciate Award.

Iowa has previously produced two Mackey Award winners: Dallas Clark (2002) and T.J. Hockenson (2018). Other notable Hawkeyes include Tony Moeaki (2009), Allen Reisner (2010), and Noah Fant (2018), who were semifinalists; Sam LaPorta was one of three finalists in 2022.

The Hawkeyes will open their season against UAlbany on August 30 at Kinnick Stadium with kickoff set for 5 p.m. Central Time.

Other Iowa players appearing on national watch lists this year include Rhys Dakin (Ray Guy Award), Gennings Dunker (Outland Trophy/Wuerffel Award), Aaron Graves (Nagurski Trophy), Mark Gronowski (Maxwell Award), Kamari Moulton (Doak Walker Award), Drew Stevens (Lou Groza Award), and Kaden Wetjen (Jet Award).
