Hawkeye public address announcer Gregg Bentler dies at age 59

Gregg Bentler, a longtime public address announcer for University of Iowa athletics, has died at age 59. He passed away on July 23, 2025.

Bentler served as the voice at many Hawkeye sporting events for more than twenty years. He was primarily known for his work with baseball and gymnastics, and in recent years was the lead announcer for men’s basketball.

He was born in Burlington, Iowa. Bentler graduated from Marquette High School in West Point in 1984 and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Iowa Tippie College of Business in 1988.

A visitation will be held for family and friends in the Feller Club Room at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Saturday, August 16, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by a celebration of life at 1 p.m.

Memorial contributions can be made to CommUnity Crisis Center or NAMI Johnson County.
