Trey Thompson signed a scholarship | Iowa Hawkeyes Men's Basketball
Trey Thompson, a native of Tennessee, has officially signed a scholarship agreement with the University of Iowa men's basketball team. The announcement was made by head coach Ben McCollum. Thompson, originally part of the Class of 2026, reclassified to join the Hawkeyes this fall.
"Trey has a level of versatility that we look for in all of our players," said McCollum. "He’s 6-foot-8, he’s physical, can really shoot it and pass it. Trey processes the game quickly to be able to trigger offense, which should help us in Big Ten play."
Thompson becomes the fourth prospect from the Class of 2025 to join Iowa's roster alongside Trevin Jirak from West Des Moines, Tate Sage from Oklahoma, and Peyton McCollum from Missouri. He is now part of a 14-player roster that includes transfers Bennett Stirtz, Kael Combs, Cam Manyawu, Isaia Howard, Tavion Banks and Joey Matteoni from Drake; Alvaro Folgueiras from Robert Morris; Brendan Hausen from Kansas State; as well as returning Hawkeye players Cooper Koch and walk-on Jacob Koch.
Thompson stands out as a four-star prospect according to On3 and 247Sports rankings. He was ranked as No. 59 overall player in his class by On3 and held the No. 2 spot in Tennessee while being rated No. 91 by 247Sports as Tennessee's top player.
His performance on the court includes averaging 18.4 points per game along with impressive shooting percentages across various categories during his time on the 3SSB Circuit. Notably recognized for multiple accolades throughout high school such as two-time finalist status for Tennessee Class AAA Mr.Basketball Award among others—he concluded his prep career setting records at Greeneville School including total points scored (2227) over three years averaging nearly ten rebounds per match.
