The City of Iowa City has earned a score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign's 11th annual Municipal Equality Index (MEI). The MEI is a nationwide evaluation of 506 cities in every state in the nation on how inclusive municipal laws, policies, and services are for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people who live and work there.
Cities are rated based on non-discrimination laws, the municipality as an employer, municipal services, law enforcement, and the city's leadership on LGBTQ+ equality. The City received 12 flex points for additional efforts for a total raw score of 112. This is the ninth consecutive year the City has earned a score of 100 or more.
The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) is the nation's largest LGBTQ civil rights organization. The HRC is the largest and most effective mainstream advocacy organization in the country.
Iowa City Mayor Bruce Teague stated, “To earn a perfect score nine years in a row is truly awesome and amazing. Through our commitment to diversity and inclusion for all, we have established ourselves as a welcoming place for the LGBTQ+ community to live, work, and thrive."
