In this talk, we’ll look at how the common ways that we use the internet (and social media in particular) are actually a form of self-exploitation. We think we are simply killing time or relaxing when we scroll through our social media feeds, but what we are actually doing is a kind of unpaid labor. By considering the ways that social media companies, advertisers, marketers, and others use algorithms to divert our attention and maximize views, we can see that some of our most regular technological habits are not conducive to our own freedom and autonomy. And if that's the case, what would it mean to use technology freely, as those who actually use it rather than be used by it? This talk will consider these questions and propose a few possible answers.
