The Gold team defeated the Black team, 3-1, in the final game of the Black and Gold Series on Thursday afternoon.
The Black team got their offense started in the second inning with a home run from freshman Kelsey Winters. That would be their only run of the game. Three others were able to record hits in the game, led by sophomore Tatianna Roman who went 3-for-4 on the afternoon.
Fifth year Breanna Vasquez got the start in the circle for the Black team and in three innings of work she recorded five strikeouts and surrendered one run. Winters came into the game in the fourth and gave up one run in two innings of work. Sophomore Emma Henderson pitched the final two innings and gave up no runs and struck out one.
The Gold team started things off with a home run in the first off the bat of junior Grace Banes. In the fifth inning they were able to plate another run on a wild pitch and freshman Skylinn Pogue provided an insurance run on an RBI single in the seventh.
Freshman Jalen Adams was the starting pitcher for the Gold team, going three innings and giving up the lone run for the Black team. The combination of Denali Loecker, Katherine Serna, and Sterling Berndt closed out the remaining four innings giving up no runs and striking out five.
The Black team finished the game with 1 run on 6 hits and one error. The Gold team finished with 3 runs on 7 hits and no errors.
The Black team took the series two games to one. The Hawkeyes will return to action in the Spring as they open their season at the FAU Paradise Classic on Friday Feb. 10 in Boca Raton, Florida.
