Ten-Digit Dialing Required in the 319 Area Code

Phone

City of Coralville issued the following announcement on October 15.

Starting October 24, 2021, callers in the 319 area code will be required to dial all ten digits (area code + telephone number: 319-XXX-XXXX) every time they make a call, even local calls.  The change will apply to landlines, cell phones, and VoIP systems. If you try to call a local number using only seven digits, you will be met with a recording telling you to hang up and try again with the full area code. Your telephone number and area code do not change. You may begin using the ten digits for calls at any time.

The change is due to an FCC order that mandated that the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline should be reachable at a three-digit number, 988, to make it easier for people in crisis to reach the hotline.  The 988 number will become effective for the Lifeline starting on July 16, 2022.  Because there are some phone numbers with 988 as the prefix in the 319 area code, we are required to make this change. It also affects the 515 area code.

For more information about the FCC order, visit www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/ten-digit-dialing.

Please note that calling 988 will not connect you to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline until July 16, 2022. If you or a loved one is in crisis, please call 1-800-273-8255.
