City of Iowa City issued the following announcement on September 07.
Mayor Bruce Teague signed a proclamation announcing Iowa City will celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, 2021.

National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the cultures and contributions of both Hispanic and Latinx Americans. The month is celebrated nationwide through festivals, art shows, conferences, community gatherings, guest speakers, and more. The month also celebrates the independence days of several Latin American countries including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua on Sept. 15, Mexico on Sept. 16, and Chile on Sept. 18.
The observance of Hispanic and Latinx contributions began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan expanded the observance to cover 30 days.
