Iowa City, along with partner cities in Nebraska and Missouri, have received a grant from the Urban Sustainability Directors Network (USDN) to help with their efforts in managing the effects of climate change such as carbon drawdown.
The grant funding was awarded to the City of Iowa City and to Lincoln, Nebraska, and Columbia, Missouri and will be used for "climate action efforts," according to a press release on the City of Iowa City website.
Those efforts include reduction of greenhouse gas emissions with projects such as planting trees in order to help reduce carbon dioxide or "carbon sequestration," according to the release.
“In Iowa City we expect to work with multiple city departments, including forestry and landfill,” Iowa City's Climate Action Coordinator Brenda Nations said in a statement. “By working together in our community and with other Midwest communities, we hope to speed up effective climate action and help our city become more resilient in the face of climate change.”
The climate action efforts also include the involvement of members of the community and are also designed to help improve environmental quality, and in particular, for those who are at risk and economically disadvantaged, according to the release.
