The Iowa City Senior Center produced around 900 hand-sewn masks last month as part of a partnership with a Johnson County nonprofit.
The senior center and Tools and Resources for Active Independent Living teamed up to deliver – without making contact, of course – the masks to seniors who request them.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention protocol states that people must wear a protective mask when venturing out in public to help stop the spread of COVID-19.
According to Senior Center program specialist Michelle Buhman, 52 volunteers made up to 50 masks.
The pandemic prompted the cancelation of most local events, but the mask effort has allowed volunteers who usually gives rides to seniors to continue working with them.
Marlea O’Brien, chair of the Volunteer Committee for TRAIL of Johnson County, told the Daily Iowan that volunteers with her organization have delivered 221 masks.
