Iowa City Transit has begun reducing its weekday service hours as the result of coronavirus concerns.
According to KWWL, bus routes will follow a Saturday schedule in addition to three weekday routes being offered during peak hours. Buses will be available between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. on an hourly basis.
While drivers will be roped off from the rest of the bus, riders are required to enter the buses from the back door. Those with mobility issues or devices will still be able to board the bus through the front door. Fares are temporarily suspended.
“The measures help promote social distancing, while also enabling the City to provide essential transportation services,” Iowa City Transit said in a statement on the city’s website. “We strongly encourage the public to limit travel on buses to essential trips only.”
Among other safety measures the transportation department has taken are enhancing the nightly sanitizing of buses, and ensuring employees always have access to wipes and disinfectant sprays.
