The University of Iowa women's volleyball team was defeated by No. 7 Wisconsin in straight sets on Sunday at Xtream Arena in Coralville. The loss brings Iowa's record to 10-4 overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten Conference.

Graduate student Chard’e Vanzandt led the Hawkeyes with eight kills and also recorded the team's only service ace. Freshman Carmel Vares contributed seven kills on 17 attempts, hitting .235. Senior Claire Ammeraal added 19 assists, six kills, and four digs.

Head coach Jim Barnes commented on the match: “Wisconsin played very well. We hit too many balls out today and that was uncharacteristic of us. I wish we would have challenged their block a little better today. Against the top teams, we are going to have to serve tougher and get them out of system more. Carmel (Vares) came back and had some good swings and showed a lot of toughness. Claire was ferocious and aggressive the whole game. I wish we could have played a better game for our great fans to see.”

In the first set, Iowa struggled early as Wisconsin went on multiple scoring runs, including an 8-0 stretch that gave them a significant lead. Despite efforts from freshmen Gia McGrew and Carmel Vares, as well as senior Milana Moisio setting up key plays, Iowa lost the set 25-16.

The second set saw Iowa briefly take its first lead after an ace from Vanzandt but could not maintain momentum as Wisconsin responded with a 9-0 run to pull away for a 25-14 win.

In the third set, Wisconsin again started strong with a 7-1 run. Although Iowa closed the gap at points with contributions from Hannah Whittingstall, Ammeraal, Hallie Steponaitis, and others, they ultimately fell short as Wisconsin finished with another late run to secure the match at 25-16.

Iowa will begin a four-match road trip starting October 3 against Oregon.
