IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa football team has announced the signing of two transfer players, cornerback Shahid Barros and quarterback Jeremy Hecklinski. This announcement was made by Moon Family Head Football Coach Kirk Ferentz.
Shahid Barros joins as a senior from New Bedford, Massachusetts. He previously played for South Dakota, where he appeared in 12 games in 2024 with 11 starts after recovering from an injury. During his time there, he recorded 41 tackles and three pass break-ups. In 2023, Barros started all 12 games but missed the NCAA quarterfinal due to injury. He contributed significantly to a secondary that ranked 18th nationally in passing yards allowed.
Barros began his college career in 2021 at South Dakota, playing four games and redshirting to preserve eligibility. His high school career included honors such as being named a two-time Big 3 All-Star and earning a spot on the Standard-Times Defensive Super Team.
Jeremy Hecklinski arrives as a redshirt freshman from Marietta, Georgia. Before transferring to Iowa, he took three snaps against North Carolina while at Wake Forest in 2024. Hecklinski's high school accolades include being a finalist for the MaxPreps National Player of the Year and participating in the All-American Bowl.
Hecklinski led Walton High School to significant success, including reaching the state title game while amassing impressive passing statistics throughout his high school career.
Coach Ferentz expressed optimism about their potential contributions to the Hawkeyes' roster.
