Yard waste collection includes leaves, food scraps, dirty cardboard pizza boxes, pumpkins, and shredded paper. Since pollinators overwinter in dead plant material, resist garden bed cleanup until it is warm enough for pollinators to emerge.
Yard Waste Collection Dates
City of Coralville yard waste collection is scheduled to start the week of March 27, 2023, weather permitting. Once yard waste collection season begins, yard waste is picked up on regular trash / recycling collection days until late November as weather allows.
What to Do With Yard Waste
Place yard waste in a Coralville recyclable yard waste bag, or in a 33-gallon container that has a 2023 annual yard waste sticker. There is a 40 pound weight limit per bag / container. Put yard waste at the curb by 7:00 am on your collection day.
Coralville recyclable yard waste bags are available for $1 each at Coralville City Hall, both Coralville Hy-Vee locations, and Theisen's. If you use yard waste bags, note that only Coralville yard waste bags will be picked up.
Annual yard waste stickers are for sale at City Hall for $25 each, or $25.60 by mail, and are valid for the 2023 yard waste season.
What Belongs in Your Yard Waste
Leaves, lawn clippings, garden residue, plants, weeds, food scraps, dirty cardboard pizza boxes, pumpkins and gourds, and shredded paper are accepted in yard waste. Rocks are not accepted.
Yard waste picked up in Coralville’s curbside program is taken to the compost area at the Iowa City Landfill.
Food Scraps & Dirty Cardboard Pizza Boxes
You can put food scraps or other organic materials in yard waste bags/bins. No special composting cart is needed. To reduce mess, wrap food waste in newspaper or in ASTM D6400 certified-compostable bags before placing food waste in a yard waste bin or bag. Regular trash bags and plastic bags are not compostable, and yard waste bins/bags with these will not be collected.
Cardboard pizza boxes that have food residue on them can be included in your yard waste (recycle the clean part of the cardboard box).
What to Do With Brush & Tree Limbs
Curbside pickup of brush and tree limbs is during yard waste collection season on your regular trash / recycling day at no charge. Tie brush and tree limbs in bundles, with each bundle no greater than 18 inches in diameter. Individual limbs in the bundles should be no larger than 2 inches in diameter and 4 feet long. Due to truck capacity, do not place more than 8 bundles at the curb.
When To Clear Your Garden for Spring
Pollinators like bees and butterflies overwinter in dead plant material, especially during chilly nights and rainy days; cleaning up garden beds and yards too soon risks destroying pollinators before it is warm enough for them to emerge. While yard waste collection officially starts in late March, resist garden bed cleanup until daytime temperatures consistently are in the 50s.
