Iowa Ties Pacific, 1-1

The University of Iowa women’s soccer team tied Pacific, 1-1, on Thursday night at the Iowa Soccer Complex.

After a scoreless first half, Hawkeye junior Kyndal Anderson rocketed a header through the net off a long free kick booted by senior Sara Wheaton. The fireworks were the culmination of an explosive 17 Iowa shots on the night, including 12 on goal.

The Tigers, who move to 2-0-3 on the season, struck back in the 76th minute on a header of their own by Pac Morrison off a corner sent by Hana Rosenblatt.

Iowa goalkeeper Monica Wilhelm finished with three saves on the night. The Hawkeyes moved to 2-2-1 through five games.

HEAR FROM HEAD COACH DAVE DIIANNI

“The result is unfortunate, because I actually thought we played pretty well. Probably in some ways the best soccer we’ve played all year. When you make one or two mistakes, our sport can be cruel. I thought we played well. I thought we moved the ball well in the first half. We were a little bit impatient I thought with our shots. There were good opportunities, but I thought we could have got better opportunities, maybe a bit deeper and force the goalkeeper to make more difficult saves. I thought our trap was good defensively.

Credit to Pacific, they grinded it out in the second half. But we still created enough chances to put the second goal away. Unfortunately, their goal was a result of a couple different mistakes by us. We give a bad free kick up, we don’t defend a throw in, and unfortunately, we lose the player in the back. Pacific is good team. They haven’t lost yet.”
