During the University of Iowa’s residence hall move-out, May 10-14, 2022, the City of Iowa City teamed up with Table to Table to offer food donation, hygiene/grooming product donation, and battery recycling for students moving out of the dormitories.
Nine drop-off locations were staged in Currier, Burge, Daum, Catlett, Mayflower, Hillcrest, Petersen, Rienow, and Slater Halls which resulted in:
- 2,800 pounds of unopened, non-perishable food donated
- 385 pounds of grooming/hygiene products donated
- 22 pounds of batteries recycled
The batteries were properly disposed of by the Iowa City Landfill’s Hazardous Material Collection Facility. Batteries should not be placed in the trash, as they are a direct cause of landfill fires. In past years, battery fires have increased during student move-out and lease change-over times. This program was established in an effort to increase proper battery disposal and education.
Johnson County residents can properly dispose of all types of batteries at no cost at several drop-off locations in the area. For a full list of locations, visit www.icgov.org/hhm.
