Montgomery to be inducted as a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN)

University Of Iowa Hospital & Clinics recently issued the following announcement on August 25.

The American Academy of Nursing announced that it has selected Lou Ann Montgomery, PhD, MAN, RN, NPD-BD, RN-BC, as a 2021 fellow, considered the highest honor in the nursing profession.

Montgomery serves as director, professional development and advanced practice; nursing director, Emergency Medical Services Learning Resource Center; and co-director, Nursing Clinical Education Center in the Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care. Throughout her distinguished career, she has served in many roles at UI Hospitals & Clinics in pediatric nursing and nursing administration. She is an adjunct clinical associate professor at the UI College of Nursing.

“Lou Ann’s impact on nursing practice and nursing education at UI Health Care is profound,” says Kim Hunter, DNP, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, chief nurse executive for UI Hospitals & Clinics. She is a strong leader who excels in building relationships and strengthening nursing practice here and with other organizations. Lou Ann is most deserving to receive this elite honor.”

Montgomery’s primary impact in nursing and health care is translating evidence into practice to improve patient- and family-centered health care and implementation of structures and programs for professional development.

Her seminal contributions to nursing include:

  1. Conducting landmark research and implementing evidence-based practices for family support and sibling visitation resulting in significant adult and pediatric critical care practice changes internationally.
  2. Providing visionary leadership and partnering with numerous academic nursing programs, including co-founding the UI Nursing Collaboratory, and convening the Iowa Academic-Practice partnership to advance the nursing profession and ensure a steady pipeline of nursing students available to enter the workforce nationally.
  3. Building a creative, foundational infrastructure for onboarding new graduate nurses and to advance the professional development of nurses.

The newest class includes 225 fellows representing 38 states, the District of Columbia, and 17 countries. The induction ceremony will take place during the Academy’s hybrid 2021 Health Policy Conference – Healthy Lives for All People: Advancing Equity, Science, and Trust on Thursday, Oct. 7, to Sunday, Oct. 9.
