Iowa City officials and employees are showing their respect and support to the LGBTQ community’s fight for equal rights, with a simple fashion accessory: a button.
People who visit city hall may see employees or officials wearing pronoun-specific buttons, such as “she, her, hers,” “he, him, he” or “they, them, theirs.”
The buttons are not required, however, it allows employees to show the pronouns they prefer.
"We wanted to make sure that when we’re serving the public, that we’re also seen as safe and welcoming to all members of our community," Iowa City Assistant Manager Ashley Monroe told KCRG news in a Feb. 25 report.
According to KCRG, Iowa City along with Cedar Rapids and Dubuque earned Human Rights Campaign’s perfect score for equality.
Iowa City also has a diversity-dedicated newsletter called The Lens, which focuses on social justice and racial equity initiatives in the community of more than 75,000 people.
