Iowa men’s golf sits ninth after day one at Highlands Invitational

The University of Iowa men’s golf team began its participation in the Highlands Invitational at Chicago Highlands Golf Club on Monday, finishing the first round with a 10-over-par score. This result places the Hawkeyes in ninth position after the opening round.

Play in the second round was halted due to darkness and is scheduled to resume on Tuesday morning. At the time play was suspended, Iowa stood at nine-over-par for the second round.

Senior Gage Messingham led Iowa with a one-over-par 73, which included an eagle and three birdies. Two of his birdies came on the back nine, and he finished tied for 33rd place. “Gage Messingham led the Hawkeyes with a one-over-par 73, recording Iowa’s best round of the day. Messingham’s performance included one eagle and three birdies, with two of those birdies coming on the back nine, placing him in a tie for 33rd.”

Redshirt freshman Grant Gudgel posted a two-over-par 74 after making three birdies on the front nine, turning at 35 and tying for 19th overall. “Grant Gudgel followed with a two-over-par 74. The Stillwater, Oklahoma, native birdied three holes on the front nine to turn at 35, finishing tied for 19th.”

Junior Max Tjoa carded a three-over-par 75 highlighted by two birdies on his back nine to finish tied for 25th place. “Max Tjoa turned in a three-over-par 75, highlighted by two birdies on the back nine, landing him in a tie for 25th.”

Sophomore Chance Rinkol recorded a four-over-par 76 with two birdies coming on his back nine. Freshman Bennett Warren completed his round at five-over-par (77), notching two early birdies.

Iowa will continue play Tuesday as they conclude their appearance at this year’s Highlands Invitational.
