Donation Drive-Thru happening Downtown on July 23

The City of Iowa City and several non-profit partners will offer donation and recycling options at the Donation Drive-Thru event – all Johnson County residents are welcome to participate! This event is meant to support local residents who may be moving during the lease-turnover time at the end of July by providing a variety of disposal options for common or problematic items when moving.

  • When: Noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 23, 2023
  • Where: Lower level of Chauncey Swan Parking Ramp - enter from Washington Street ramp entrance
  • Accepted items for recycling: Batteries, light bulbs, books (paperback and hardcover), mattresses (recycled for $10 per item - cash only), box springs (recycled for $10 per item - cash only)
  • Accepted items for donation:
    • Furniture (including dressers, chairs, tables, etc.)
      • Large, heavy, or outdated items may be turned away by event staff/volunteers
    • Books (paperback and hardcover)
    • Mattresses and box springs (twin, double, or queen)
      • King-sized mattresses and box springs not accepted
    • Floor lamps or table lamps
    • Microwaves
    • Toasters
    • Food (unopened and non-perishable)
    • Toiletry items (unopened; including toilet paper, shampoo, soap, etc.)
    • Clothing and shoes
    • Blankets
    • Towels
Donation items must be clean, in good working order, and in good condition (meaning no rips, tears, stains, pet hair, food residue, damage, etc.). Donated items will be provided to our partner organizations including Antelope Lending Library, Houses into Homes, Table to Table, and Open Heartland. Recyclable items will be properly recycled via City of Iowa City programs.
