A new group - Elders of Color - has been formed to bring together older adults who are people of color to share their diverse perspectives and stories and foster new connections.
The Elders of Color group aims to provide a safe and welcoming space for people of color to share their experiences, knowledge, and wisdom. Through regular meetings and events, members will have the opportunity to connect with others who share similar experiences and to learn from one another. Members can expect to engage in meaningful discussions, share their stories, and learn from the experiences and perspectives of others.
The Elders of Color group welcomes all people of color who are 50 years and older to join.
“We wanted to create a space where older adults of color can come together, share their stories, and connect with others who have similar experiences," said Albert Abreau, the group's founder. "We believe that this group will provide a unique opportunity for members to learn from one another and form new connections in a supportive environment.”
Individuals interested in joining are encouraged to attend the group's free luncheon and meeting from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 14, 2023, in the Assembly Room at the Senior Center, 28 S. Linn St. The meeting will include a tour of the Senior Center. In order to ensure an accurate count for lunch, please call 319-356-5220 to confirm your attendance.
Those unable to attend the luncheon can register for the group by contacting Senior Center Coordinator LaTasha DeLoach at ldeloach@iowa-city.org or 319-356-5225.
