Over the next few months, the Public Works Department and the Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity (IVHFH) Restore are partnering to repurpose thousands of bricks that were once located in Iowa City's Downtown Pedestrian Mall.

The two entities will be palletizing and transporting the bricks to ReStore, 2401 Scott Blvd. SE, where they will be for sale to the public intermittently, depending on public demand. Bricks may be purchased during regular ReStore hours, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Proceeds will benefit IVHFH programs.

Pallets will contain 200 bricks each and may be purchased by the pallet or in smaller quantities.

Based on a 2022 Waste Characterization Study conducted by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, construction and demolition debris makes up approximately 18.5% of what goes into Iowa’s landfills. This computes to about 25,000 tons per year at the Iowa City Landfill. The Pedestrian Mall brick repurposing project is estimated to divert up to 50 tons of reusable items.
