The middle of May is move-out time for many college students and many other Iowa City residents!

The City of Iowa City has gathered a few simple tips to make the move-out season easy and environmentally friendly!

Moving Guide

Moving and have materials to get rid of? Check out our local Moving Guide for information on common items you may need to get rid of during a move, such as electronics, light bulbs, cleaning products, furniture, and more. Read it online now!

Curbside dumping is illegal

Do not leave piles of items at the curb. Iowa City curbside customers can schedule a bulky pickup for large items, such as electronics or furniture, at www.icgov.org/bulkyitem. Other recycling and landfill services information is available at www.icgov.org/landfill

Fines will be enforced for those who dump items at the curb. You could also lose your rental deposit.

Recycle cardboard

Cardboard is not allowed in the trash in Iowa City/Johnson County and must be recycled. Recycle it via your on-site recycling program or at any area drop-off locations listed at www.icgov.org/recycle.

Don't throw away batteries

Do not place batteries in the trash, or your regular recycling bin, as they can cause landfill and recycling facility fires. Properly dispose of batteries at Iowa City drop-off locations:

  • City Hall, 510 E. Washington St.
  • Both ACE Hardware locations: 600 N Dodge St., 1558 Mall Drive
  • Iowa City Fire Station #2, 301 Emerald St.
Learn about all the locations you can recycle batteries in Johnson County by visiting www.icgov.org/hhm

Lawn care

If you are responsible for a single-family house, make sure that the lawn care is taken care of before you leave, or make sure someone can take care of it over the summer.

Avoid dumpster overload

If you recycle and properly dispose of things that shouldn't be trashed, you will help make sure that any shared dumpster won't be packed with too much stuff!

For waste and recycling questions, contact the Recycling Coordinator at jwilch@iowa-city.org or 319-887-6110.
