Volunteers needed for Climate Action event this Earth Day

Ready to make a difference? This year in honor of Earth Day, Iowa City will be hosting its second Neighborhood Energy Blitz on Saturday, April 22, 2023. Volunteers are needed to help go door to door delivering energy-saving kits to homes in the Creekside Neighborhood.

Volunteers will meet at Chadek Green Park and will serve in teams that will cover walking routes of approximately two miles. Participants can sign up for either a morning shift from 9 a.m. to noon, an afternoon shift from 2-5 p.m., or both. In the afternoon, volunteers will return to pick up kit boxes containing used light bulbs and batteries for safe disposal and recycling.

Helpers of all ages and abilities are welcome! Children younger than 14 years old should be accompanied by an adult. Virtual training for all volunteers will be held a week in advance of the event.

This event is part of Iowa City’s Climate Action and Adaptation Plan, which seeks to achieve net zero carbon emissions for the City by 2050. Supplies contained within the kit have the potential to save an estimated $75 per household in energy costs and a combined 478,142 pounds of averted greenhouse gas emissions for the neighborhood year over year.
