The holiday shopping rush is entering its final stretch. With COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses still present in our community, it’s important to approach your shopping in a safe way.
The best way to stay safe during the holidays is to get vaccinated against COVID-19 and the flu—if you haven’t already. Employees who wish to get vaccinated should call the University Employee Health Clinic (UEHC) at 319-356-3631, option 3. The UEHC can also help you receive a COVID-19 booster.
Online shopping
Skip the hassle of the stores all together and shop online. Many online retail outlets offer deals for this holiday season.
Local curbside pickup or delivery
Want to support local businesses? Call ahead or check out their website to see if they offer curbside pickup or delivery options.
Shopping in person? Follow these safety precautions
It’s a good idea to avoid indoor, crowded spaces. However, for those of you who still can’t resist shopping in person, shop quickly and keep these safety precautions in mind.
Wear a mask
Wearing a face mask is one of the most important (and easiest) steps you can take to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses. And—as the weather gets colder—it has the added benefit of keeping your face warm.
Wash your hands often
Wash or clean your hands often with soap and water or hand sanitizer before and after you shop. This simple task can make a big difference.
Avoid crowding—shop during quiet(er) times
When you search a store online, it often shows at which times it’s the busiest. If you must go in person, go during low traffic hours; you’ll likely get better service as well. If you can’t find details on a stores non-busy times, stores are generally the quietest right after they open.
Be purposeful when shopping
It is best to know what you intend to look at prior to going. Avoid browsing as it increases your time in the store, your exposure to others, and your overall risk.
