The City of Coralville has scheduled earth-friendly events in April and May to make the most of household items and safely dispose of personal documents, along with a free extra trash cart collection, Mayor’s Clean Up Week, and a seed swap.
City Wide Garage Sale: Saturday, April 30, 8:00 am to noon
Starting at 8:00 am, stop by the Recreation Center at 1506 8th Street to pick up a map of participating sales throughout Coralville. Donuts and juice will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. To be included in the city sale listing, call the Coralville Recreation Center by April 24. Call 319.248.1750 for more information.
Cart a la Carte: Free Extra Trash Collection: April 29 and May 2
City of Coralville trash customers will get their trash carts emptied one extra time for free this spring. Place trash or smaller items in the cart on the designated day, and set your cart at the curb. As usual, tag extra bags of trash that don’t fit in the cart. The free extra collection will occur:
Friday, April 29, for homes with regular trash collection on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday
Monday, May 2, for homes with regular trash collection on Thursday
This extra collection is to empty trash carts only and is in addition to the regular collection for that week. Recycling, yard waste, and trash will still be collected on your regular day.
Recycle Swap Day: Saturday, May 7, 8:00 am to noon
This free, earth-friendly event in the City Hall parking lot at 1512 7th Street keeps items out of the landfill and gives a new home to unwanted items. Donate clean, usable items that are in good condition, or take items donated by others. The event is free and treasure hunters are welcome, regardless of donations.
Furniture, appliances, household items, books, clothing, or toys are accepted. Items left at the end of the day will be donated to non-profit organizations. Call 319.248.1720 for more information or to volunteer.
Seeds & Plants: Saturday, May 7, 8:00 am to noon
The Coralville Public Library will host a "seed swap" table at Recycle Swap Day outside Coralville City Hall.
Bring any plants or unused seeds you'd like to exchange, or pick up free seeds or plants -- you don't need to bring a plant or seeds to take something home. Leftovers will go the to the Coralville Public Library's seed library! For more information, contact Kayla Cook at kcook@coralville.org or call the Coralville Public Library at 319.248.1850.
Community Shred Event: Saturday, May 7, 10:00 am to Noon
Coralville residents can bring up to two boxes of personal papers to the Coralville Community Aquatic Center parking lot at 1513 7th Street (next to the City Hall lot) to be shredded on site for free by Heartland Shredding, in partnership with the Coralville Police Department. Held rain or shine.
Any type of paper, paper clips, staples, rubber bands, labels, and file tabs can be put into the security containers; 100% of the shredded material will be taken to recycling centers and recycled into usable products. Call 319.248.1800 for more information.
Mayor's Spring Clean-Up Week: May 9-13
During Mayor's Clean-Up Week in Coralville, get rid of items too big to fit in your trash cart (such as broken furniture or bathroom fixtures) that need to be thrown away and cannot be reused. This service is available to Coralville residents with City trash and recycling services. Place items curbside up to 24 hours before, or by 7:00 am on your regular trash collection day.
- Items must be able to be reasonably lifted by two people, and must fit in the garbage truck; dismantle large items.
- Appliances, construction materials, electronics, pallets, wooden swing sets, tires, hot tubs, railroad ties, concrete brick or block, or hazardous materials will not be accepted. Appliances, electronics, and tires can be picked up separately by appointment throughout the year.
- Metal is picked up by a separate truck to be recycled; metal pickup may not occur on your regular collection day.
- This is a free event for bulky items; tag extra garbage bags as usual.
- Any items not collected should be removed from the curb within 24 hours after collection day.
- Do not leave your garbage at other people's curbs. If someone helps themselves to your curbside items and leaves a mess behind, you are responsible for cleaning it up.
- Do not send usable items to the landfill. Consider donating usable items to Recycle Swap Day, Habitat ReStore, Goodwill, or Houses into Homes.
