In this course, we will broaden our understanding of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) identities, experiences, and activism. Drawing upon the curriculum of a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) taught by Jacob McWilliams and K. Mohrman from the University of Colorado, we’ll discuss terminology and definitions, explore the concepts of gender and sexual identity as social constructs, and introduce queer theory as a framework for analyzing the impact of norms about gender, sex, and sexuality on our lives and communities. Then we’ll take a look at some contemporary LGBTQ+ issues like transgender access to public restrooms, racism and whiteness in LGBTQ+ communities, reconciling with religion, queer parenting, and making sex education inclusive.
Along with course content, you will also learn how to access thousands of free Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and have the opportunity to rewatch lectures and explore supplemental class materials on your own.
