Iowa City protesters have seen both calm and chaotic nights while marching.
The march Wednesday, June 3 ended with tear gas and flash bangs as police tried to stop protesters from blocking the interstate.
Thursday, protesters were joined by Mayor Bruce Teague and other city council members. As the group made their way to Interstate Highway 80, they were met by state troopers. Troopers and Teague encouraged them to turn around and march peacefully back to downtown Iowa City, according to the Iowa City Press-Citizen.
Teague had urged protestors not to go onto the interstate earlier in the march, telling them that they would be stopped if they made their way onto the highway, but not by city police. Protesters turned around and ended the march peacefully on the Pentacrest, saying they would return the next day.
Teague apologized for what happened Wednesday night during the protests, calling the use of force disturbing.
University of Iowa officials are reviewing the use of tear gas on demonstrators, particularly student demonstrators.
Thursday night's protests did have one incident of vandalism as "BLM" was spray-painted on the pillars of the University of Iowa president's residence.
