The NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee has announced the allocation of automatic qualifying spots for the 2026 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. The Big Ten Conference received 87 out of 288 available automatic bids, more than any other conference. The allocations per weight class for the Big Ten are: 125 pounds (9), 133 (8), 141 (7), 149 (9), 157 (8), 165 (9), 174 (10), 184 (8), 197 (10), and heavyweight/285 pounds (9).
These pre-allocated spots were determined based on regular season performances by wrestlers in each conference through February 21. The process used a sliding scale that included win percentage, coaches’ rankings, and RPI ranking. Wrestlers who met at least two out of three criteria helped secure an automatic spot for their conference in their weight class. Each conference was guaranteed at least one qualifier per weight class, awarded to the tournament champion if no wrestler met two thresholds.
Automatic qualification will be decided during conference tournaments, which assign spots solely based on place-finish. The Big Ten Championships are scheduled for March 7-8 in University Park, Pennsylvania.
After all conference tournaments conclude, the NCAA committee will meet to select an additional 43 at-large qualifiers. These selections will be announced on March 11, with full brackets and seeding revealed on March 12 at NCAA.com. All ten weight classes at nationals will feature a field of thirty-three wrestlers.
In addition to pre-allocation news, the NCAA also released its third coaches’ rankings and second RPI update of the season. Iowa Hawkeyes wrestlers featured in these rankings include Dean Peterson (#7 at 125 lbs.), Drake Ayala (#8 at 133 lbs.), Nasir Bailey (#11 in coaches’ ranking/#4 RPI at 141 lbs.), Ryder Block (#15/#11 at 149 lbs.), Michael Caliendo (#3/#3 at 165 lbs.), Patrick Kennedy (#3/#2 at 174 lbs.), and Ben Kueter (#10 at heavyweight).
Conference allocation totals for this year’s championships show the Atlantic Coast Conference with thirty-nine spots, Big Twelve with sixty-three, Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association with twenty-six, Ivy League with twenty-three, Mid-American Conference with twenty-seven, Pacific-12 Conference with thirteen, and Southern Conference with ten.
