Kirk Ferentz, the head coach of Iowa Hawkeyes Men’s Football, addressed the media during the Big Ten Media Day press conference. Ferentz began by expressing his excitement for the upcoming college football season, stating that this time of year is always filled with optimism and anticipation.
Ferentz highlighted the significant changes in college football over recent years, noting the expansion of the Big Ten Conference from its original ten schools to include teams on both coasts. “Probably the only constant that I have seen over the last several years is change,” he remarked.
He also took a moment to thank Commissioner Petitti and Beth Goetz, Iowa’s director of athletics, for their efforts amidst these transitions. “I know they’ve all got a lot of challenges that they’ve been working through,” he said.
Discussing his team for 2025, Ferentz admitted uncertainty about their potential but praised their work ethic and leadership. He emphasized August as a crucial month for determining starting line-ups and recalled past seasons where players emerged as key contributors mid-season.
When asked about revenue sharing concerns affecting non-blue blood programs like Iowa, Ferentz viewed it as a positive step towards maintaining competitive balance. He expressed hope for finding balance akin to professional leagues while acknowledging college sports’ unique nature.
Reflecting on his long tenure at Iowa City, Ferentz shared his initial surprise at staying so long but expressed contentment with life there. Regarding new quarterback Mark Gronowski, he described him as an impressive addition to the team.
Addressing social media’s role in modern sports, Ferentz acknowledged its importance despite personal disinterest. “It’s part of today’s world,” he stated.
Finally, discussing quarterback competition beyond Gronowski, Ferentz noted improvements in depth compared to previous years and expressed confidence in developing talent within their roster.
