Iowa is set to host No. 9 Nebraska in a men’s basketball game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City on Tuesday, February 17. The matchup will be broadcast on BTN, with radio coverage provided by the Hawkeye Radio Network.
The Hawkeyes enter the contest after a loss to Purdue, 78-57, where they struggled with shooting and rebounding. Despite this setback, Iowa has an 18-7 record overall and is 12-2 at home this season. The team has surpassed its win totals from the previous season and is currently facing a challenging stretch with five Quad 1 opponents in their final seven games.
Senior Bennett Stirtz continues to be a key player for Iowa, having scored over 30 points three times in the last five games and at least 20 points in seven of the last eight contests. He recently scored 36 points against Northwestern, tying for the fourth-most in a single game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Stirtz has also earned back-to-back Big Ten Player of the Week honors and was named Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week on February 10. He was added to the Wooden Award Late Midseason Top 20 list on February 10.
Stirtz averages 23.3 points per game in Big Ten play and ranks second in scoring for league-only games. He has achieved three games with more than 30 points and nine with more than 20 points during conference play. “Stirtz is the first Hawkeye since Keegan Murray in 2021-22 to earn the accolade in consecutive weeks,” according to team notes.
Iowa’s defense has been strong this season, allowing just under 65 points per game—the lowest in the Big Ten—and holding six opponents below 60 points.
Nebraska comes into the game with a record of 22-3 overall and an 11-3 mark in conference play but has lost three of its last five games after starting the season with a twenty-game winning streak. The Huskers are led by former Hawkeye Pryce Sandfort, who averages 17.5 points per game and leads the Big Ten in several three-point shooting categories. Reink Mast contributes an average of 14.3 points and leads Nebraska with six rebounds per game.
The Huskers rank high nationally for assist-to-turnover ratio (fourth) and assists per game (13th). Their defense allows an average of only 66 points per contest, ranking them among national leaders for both field goal percentage defense (20th) and three-point percentage defense (22nd).
Tuesday’s matchup marks the teams’ first meeting this season out of two scheduled contests; Iowa holds a historical advantage over Nebraska, leading the all-time series with a record of 27-15 and having won ten out of their last eleven meetings at home.
Head coach Ben McCollum has recorded eighteen wins so far this season—placing him third for most victories by a first-year head coach at Iowa through twenty-five games.
The upcoming game will be televised on BTN, featuring Kevin Kugler as play-by-play announcer alongside Shon Morris (color) and Andy Katz (sideline). On radio broadcasts, Gary Dolphin will handle play-by-play duties with Bobby Hansen providing analysis across more than forty stations covering Iowa and surrounding states.
