Ben McCollum recently returned from a family vacation, his first in nearly two years. The trip followed a busy spring where he led Drake to the NCAA Tournament’s Round of 32 and took on the role of Iowa men’s basketball coach. During this period, he also focused on rebuilding the team roster while managing time between Iowa City and Des Moines.

In June, just before his new Hawkeye team gathered for preseason conditioning, McCollum shared insights with Iowa Magazine about his approach to preparing student-athletes for success. “The well-timed getaway,” he said, “followed a frenetic spring.”

McCollum discussed how he balances professional responsibilities with family life. He emphasized the importance of process and preparation in achieving success both on and off the court.
